Madagascar Makay Expedition

On arrival at Ivato International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your guide and transferred to your hotel. This first day is designed for a smooth arrival after your international flight and time to settle in before the expedition begins.

Your guide will provide a short briefing about the itinerary, road conditions, trekking rhythm, luggage preparation, and Makay field logistics. Depending on your arrival time, a gentle introduction to the capital or a panoramic viewpoint can be arranged.

The evening is free to rest and prepare for the journey through the highlands, rainforest, sandstone country, and western Madagascar.

After breakfast, depart south through the central highlands along scenic roads lined with rice fields, red-earth villages, vegetable farms, and terraced hillsides. The drive offers a strong first impression of rural Madagascar and the daily life of the highland communities.

A stop may be made in Ambatolampy, known for traditional aluminum workshops, before continuing toward Antsirabe.

Arrive in Antsirabe, a pleasant highland town known for its cool climate, colonial architecture, pousse-pousse rickshaws, gemstone workshops, and artisan culture. A short city orientation can be arranged before check-in.

Continue south through changing highland scenery, passing rice terraces, mountain villages, eucalyptus forests, and local markets. The landscape gradually becomes greener as the road approaches the eastern rainforest corridor.

Ranomafana is one of Madagascar’s most important rainforest destinations, famous for lemurs, birds, chameleons, frogs, orchids, tree ferns, and dense tropical vegetation.

On arrival, settle into your lodge near the park. If timing allows, an optional evening walk outside the park can be arranged to look for nocturnal wildlife.

Begin the morning with a guided visit of Ranomafana National Park. Trails can be humid and sometimes muddy, but they offer excellent chances to observe lemurs, birds, reptiles, insects, medicinal plants, and rainforest flora.

After the visit, drive south through Fianarantsoa and Ambalavao, where the scenery shifts from rainforest to open highland and dry southern landscapes. Stop at Anja Community Reserve, one of the best places to see ring-tailed lemurs in a natural setting beneath impressive granite cliffs.

Today is dedicated to Isalo National Park, one of Madagascar’s most iconic landscapes. With a local guide, explore sandstone formations, deep canyons, dry forest pockets, open savannah, viewpoints, and natural swimming pools.

Depending on the selected trail, the visit may include the Natural Pool, Namaza Canyon, the Black Pool, the Blue Pool, or other scenic areas. Wildlife sightings may include ring-tailed lemurs, sifakas, birds, reptiles, and plants adapted to the dry climate.

In the late afternoon, enjoy the changing light over the sandstone massif before returning to the lodge.

Leave the Isalo region and travel by 4x4 toward the Makay access area. This is a transition from the classic southern route into one of Madagascar’s most remote expedition zones.

The road becomes rougher and more isolated, crossing dry plains, rural villages, riverbeds, and open savannah landscapes. Travel time depends on track and weather conditions.

Arrive in Beronono, where the local expedition team is organized. Final preparations are made for the Makay trek, including food supplies, camping equipment, water strategy, porter organization, and route briefing.

The Makay trekking adventure begins today. After breakfast, start walking with your local guide and support team through remote terrain, dry riverbeds, open savannah, and rocky areas.

The first trekking day introduces the scale and isolation of the Makay Massif, with sandstone formations, dry vegetation, distant cliffs, and traditional rural life along the way.

Arrive near Sariaka, where the team sets up camp. Dinner is prepared by the expedition cook team under the open sky.

Continue deeper into the Makay region, following sandy riverbeds, rocky passages, dry forest sections, and narrow valleys shaped by erosion.

The scenery becomes increasingly distinctive, with sandstone walls, isolated vegetation, hidden water points, and quiet wilderness. Your guide explains the geology of the massif and the importance of seasonal water sources in this dry environment.

Reach Anosilahy and settle into camp for a peaceful evening far from roads and towns.

Today’s trek continues through the maze-like sandstone landscapes of the Makay. The route may cross dry riverbeds, small gallery forests, natural corridors, and sections shaped by seasonal water flow.

Depending on water levels and route conditions, there may be river crossings or walking along wet sections. Wildlife observation is possible in forested areas, especially birds, reptiles, insects, and occasionally lemurs.

Continue toward Beravitrazo through increasingly dramatic sandstone scenery. This stage may include canyon entrances, uneven terrain, rocky passages, and open viewpoints.

The guide selects the safest and most suitable route according to weather, water levels, and group ability. If conditions allow, there may be time to stop near a natural pool for a refreshing break.

In the afternoon, reach the camping area near Beravitrazo and enjoy dinner in the heart of the wilderness.

Continue northward across the Makay wilderness through canyon floors, riverbeds, dry vegetation, and open landscapes. The route changes constantly between enclosed sandstone corridors and wide plateau views.

This section highlights the silence, isolation, and raw beauty of the Makay. Occasional encounters with villagers or zebu herders may offer insight into life in one of Madagascar’s most remote regions.

Today’s walk continues through the northern direction of the Makay crossing. Expect a mixture of canyon walking, riverbeds, sandstone passages, and occasional climbs to reach viewpoints.

This can be one of the more adventurous trekking days, rewarding travelers with strong contrasts between cliffs, vegetation, water, and open landscapes.

Continue toward Janjy through remote areas rarely visited by travelers. The route may pass valleys, seasonal water points, and traditional paths used by local communities and zebu herders.

The rhythm of expedition life is now well established: early breakfast, walking, picnic lunch, afternoon trek, camp setup, and dinner in nature.

Weather permitting, the night sky in the Makay offers excellent stargazing with very little light pollution.

Continue trekking through the Makay’s wild sandstone country, following dry channels, open terrain, and shaded areas where water and vegetation are present.

This section offers full immersion in the wilderness, with time for scenic rest stops near natural pools, viewpoints, or quiet canyon sections depending on the chosen route.

After breakfast, trek toward Sakamaly through forest corridors, riverbeds, sandstone formations, and remote open terrain. The route may feel increasingly isolated, with long stretches of wild scenery and few signs of habitation.

Your guide may explain how local people use seasonal routes, water points, and natural landmarks to navigate the massif. The day also offers insight into the conservation challenges of such a remote region.

Continue through northern Makay landscapes, with narrow passages, sandy riverbeds, rocky sections, and possible water crossings depending on seasonal conditions.

Reach Sakapaly in the afternoon and settle into camp.

Leave Sakapaly and continue toward Tsinjorambo on one of the final full trekking days. The landscape may gradually open as the route approaches the exit area, while still passing canyons, riverbeds, and forested sections.

This is a rewarding day to reflect on the crossing: remote camps, river passages, sandstone corridors, natural pools, and the support of the local expedition team.

Today you leave the Makay trekking area and begin the long transition toward the west coast. Depending on route conditions, you may walk to the exit point or transfer directly to the vehicle access area.

Meet the 4x4 team and drive through remote tracks toward Sakoazato and Malaimbady before continuing to the Menabe region and Morondava.

After many days in the wilderness, arrival in Morondava brings a welcome return to comfort, showers, and a relaxed coastal atmosphere.

Enjoy a relaxed day on the west coast after the Makay expedition. Time is free to rest at the hotel, walk along the beach, explore Morondava town, visit the local market, or simply enjoy the slower coastal rhythm.

In the late afternoon, depart for the famous Avenue of the Baobabs. This is one of Madagascar’s most iconic landscapes, especially at sunset when the baobabs stand in silhouette against the golden sky.

Return to Morondava after the visit for a comfortable evening at the hotel.

After breakfast, begin the long drive back toward the central highlands. The route leaves the dry western region and gradually returns to cooler highland scenery.

Stops are made along the way for photos, meals, and rest breaks. This is a full travel day, but it is an important transition from the west coast back toward Antananarivo.

Arrive in Antsirabe in the evening and settle into your hotel.

Enjoy a final morning in Antsirabe if time allows, with the possibility to visit artisan workshops, a local market, gemstone crafts, embroidery cooperatives, or simply enjoy the calm highland atmosphere.

On arrival, transfer to your hotel for the final night. Depending on timing, a craft market stop or city viewpoint can be arranged.

At the appropriate time, transfer to Ivato International Airport for your departure flight.
