Overview

Northern Madagascar Grand Nature & Islands is a private expedition through the north and northwest of Madagascar, combining dry forest, caves, natural pools, remote wildlife areas, rainforest mountains, red earth landscapes, limestone tsingy, coastal scenery and tropical islands.

The journey starts in Antananarivo, flies to Mahajanga, and continues through Ankarafantsika, Anjohibe Caves, Cirque Rouge and Antsanitia before crossing remote northern routes to Antsohihy, Daraina, Marojejy and Sambava. It then turns west toward the Red Tsingy, Ankarana, the Sacred Lake of Antagnavo, Diego Suarez, Amber Mountain, the Three Bays, Ramena and the Emerald Sea.

The final section travels by road and boat to Nosy Be for island excursions to Nosy Komba, Nosy Tanikely, Nosy Iranja and Nosy Sakatia before flying back to Antananarivo. The route is adventurous, with long transfers, remote roads, rainforest walks, dry forest visits, cave and tsingy exploration, boat excursions and beach time.

Travel character: This is a private northern Madagascar expedition with a national accompanying guide during the full tour. Certified local guides lead visits inside national parks, reserves, caves and protected sites. Remote sections such as Daraina, Marojejy and parts of the northwest and northeast roads require flexibility with road conditions, weather, domestic flights, sea conditions and accommodation standards.

Welcome to Madagascar. On arrival at Ivato International Airport, you will be welcomed by your driver-guide and transferred to your hotel in Antananarivo, locally known as Tana.

The first day is kept relaxed after the international flight. Depending on arrival time, a short city orientation or welcome briefing can be arranged. Your guide will explain the full northern route, domestic flight planning, road conditions, remote sections, park visits, boat excursions, island days, luggage advice, and general travel rhythm.

This is also a good time to prepare walking shoes, rain protection, light clothes, binoculars, camera equipment, insect repellent, sun protection, and a small daypack.

Accommodation: Relais des Plateaux, Palissandre Hotel or similar

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the domestic flight to Mahajanga, the main city of Madagascar’s northwest coast. On arrival, meet your local driver-guide and continue by road toward Ankarafantsika National Park.

The drive introduces the dry forest and savanna landscapes of the northwest. Depending on arrival time, a short introductory walk can be arranged around the park or lodge area.

Ankarafantsika is one of Madagascar’s most important dry forest and birding destinations. The atmosphere is warm, open, and very different from the humid rainforest parks. It is a good place to begin the wildlife part of the tour.

Accommodation: Blue Vanga Lodge, Gîte d’Ampijoroa, or similar

Today is dedicated to Ankarafantsika National Park. Early morning is the best time for birdwatching and wildlife observation, so the visit begins early with a local park guide.

Explore the dry forest trails in search of Coquerel’s sifaka, mongoose lemur, common brown lemur, sportive lemurs, chameleons, geckos, reptiles, and endemic birds. Birdwatchers may look for Madagascar Fish Eagle, Schlegel’s asity, White-breasted mesite, Van Dam’s vanga, couas, vangas, kingfishers, raptors, and lake birds.

Depending on the selected circuit, the visit may include forest trails, lake scenery, birdwatching areas, canyon landscapes, and viewpoints.

In the afternoon, enjoy a second walk or relax near the lodge depending on heat, wildlife activity, and guest interest.

Accommodation: Blue Vanga Lodge, Gîte d’Ampijoroa, or similar

After breakfast, leave the Ankarafantsika area and travel toward the Anjohibe Caves region. This day is focused on cave landscapes, natural pools, limestone formations, and the unusual natural scenery of the northwest.

Visit Anjohibe Caves, an impressive cave system known for underground passages, limestone formations, stalactites, stalagmites, and a mysterious natural atmosphere. With a local guide, explore the accessible parts of the cave and learn about the geology and local stories connected to the area.

After the cave visit, continue to the nearby natural pool. This is a refreshing and photogenic stop surrounded by nature. Depending on local conditions, guests can relax, enjoy the scenery, or photograph water reflections, rock formations, forest edges, and rural landscapes.

After the visit, continue toward the Mahajanga region for overnight.

Accommodation: Baobab Tree Hotel, Antsanitia Resort, or similar

After breakfast, visit the colorful Cirque Rouge, one of the most photogenic natural sites near Mahajanga. This eroded landscape is famous for its red, orange, white, and pink earth formations.

The colors and textures create beautiful compositions, especially when the light is soft. The local guide can explain how erosion shaped the natural amphitheater and its layered colors.

After the visit, continue to Antsanitia, a peaceful coastal area north of Mahajanga. On arrival, check in at the lodge and enjoy the seaside atmosphere. Depending on timing, enjoy a sunset walk near the beach, river mouth, or fishing village.

Accommodation: Antsanitia Resort, Baobab Tree Hotel, or similar

Today is dedicated to Antsanitia, a calm coastal area where the river meets the sea. This is a slower day after several travel and nature visits.

Guests can relax by the beach, walk along the coast, photograph fishermen and pirogues, or explore the river-mouth scenery. Depending on tide and local arrangements, optional activities may include a boat ride, village visit, mangrove discovery, or simply a peaceful beach day.

Antsanitia is a good place to capture the softer side of Madagascar’s northwest: coastal landscapes, local life, fishing culture, beach scenes, and sunset light.

Accommodation: Antsanitia Resort, Baobab Tree Hotel, or similar

After breakfast, depart from Antsanitia and begin the long journey north toward Antsohihy. This is a major road transfer through rural northern Madagascar.

The route passes villages, fields, dry landscapes, rivers, roadside markets, and changing vegetation. It is mainly a travel day, but it gives a strong view of daily life in northern Madagascar.

Arrive in Antsohihy and check in at the best available hotel.

Accommodation: Best available hotel in Antsohihy, or similar

After breakfast, continue the journey north-east toward Daraina, one of the most important wildlife areas in northern Madagascar.

The road becomes more remote, passing villages, forest fragments, rural landscapes, and local markets. Arrival time depends on road conditions.

Daraina is famous for the rare golden-crowned sifaka, one of Madagascar’s most beautiful lemurs. Accommodation is simple in this region, but the wildlife value is exceptional.

Accommodation: Simple best-available lodge or guesthouse in Daraina, or similar

Today is dedicated to the Daraina region. With a local guide, explore the forest area in search of the rare golden-crowned sifaka, the main wildlife highlight of this area.

The forest may also offer birds, reptiles, chameleons, geckos, dry forest plants, and local village scenery. This is one of the most special wildlife days of the tour because Daraina is less visited than many national parks and gives a more remote field experience.

Depending on local arrangements, a night walk may be possible for mouse lemurs, sportive lemurs, geckos, chameleons, and nocturnal insects.

Accommodation: Simple best-available lodge or guesthouse in Daraina, or similar

After breakfast, leave Daraina and continue toward the Marojejy region. The landscapes gradually change as the journey approaches greener and more humid rainforest areas.

This is a long transfer day, but it is visually interesting because the route moves from dry northern habitats into mountain rainforest country. On arrival near Marojejy, check in at the best available lodge or guesthouse.

Depending on timing, a short village walk or forest-edge introduction may be arranged.

Accommodation: Best available lodge or guesthouse near Marojejy / Sambava / Andapa area, or similar

Today begins the deeper exploration of Marojejy National Park, one of Madagascar’s most spectacular rainforest mountain areas.

With a local guide, explore rainforest trails according to guest fitness, weather, and the selected circuit. The park is known for dense forest, steep slopes, waterfalls, chameleons, frogs, birds, orchids, tree ferns, and mountain scenery.

This first Marojejy day can focus on lower rainforest, waterfalls, wildlife, and forest atmosphere. The experience is very different from Ankarafantsika and Daraina, with humid vegetation, dense greenery, and mountain air.

Accommodation: Best available lodge, guesthouse, or Marojejy camp depending on final circuit

Enjoy a second day in Marojejy National Park, allowing deeper exploration and better chances for rainforest wildlife and photography.

Depending on the selected circuit, the morning may include another rainforest trail, waterfall visit, wildlife search, birdwatching, or higher-elevation forest section. The wider Marojejy region is associated with rare species such as the silky sifaka, although sightings depend strongly on altitude, circuit, time available, and local conditions.

This day is excellent for travelers who enjoy rainforest immersion, mountain scenery, and biodiversity. Possible subjects include chameleons, frogs, orchids, ferns, waterfalls, birds, insects, forest light, and rainforest textures.

In the late afternoon, leave the Marojejy area and drive to Sambava, the main coastal town of the SAVA region. Sambava is known as part of Madagascar’s famous vanilla region and offers a practical and comfortable overnight before the long route toward Red Tsingy and Ankarana the next day.

Accommodation: Best available hotel in Sambava, or similar

After breakfast, depart from Sambava and travel west toward the dry northern landscapes. This is a long travel day, but it offers strong contrasts between the green northeast coast, villages, plantations, open countryside, and red earth zones.

Visit the spectacular Red Tsingy, also known as Tsingy Rouge. The red laterite formations are shaped by erosion and create dramatic abstract landscapes, warm colors, and strong natural patterns. This site is completely different from the grey limestone tsingy of Ankarana and offers one of the most colorful landscape moments of the tour.

After the Red Tsingy visit, continue toward Ankarana and check in at the lodge.

Accommodation: Iharana Bush Camp, Ankarana Lodge, or similar

Today is dedicated to Ankarana National Park, one of northern Madagascar’s most impressive limestone landscapes.

With a local guide, explore the park’s tsingy formations, dry forest, caves, viewpoints, and wildlife areas. Possible subjects include crowned lemurs, Sanford’s brown lemurs, northern sportive lemurs, bats, chameleons, geckos, birds, reptiles, dry forest plants, sacred caves, and limestone formations.

The exact circuit depends on local conditions and guest fitness. The afternoon can include a sacred cave visit if not already part of the morning route.

Ankarana is a strong contrast to Marojejy: dry, rocky, bright, and dramatic, with limestone formations and hidden cave systems.

Accommodation: Iharana Bush Camp, Ankarana Lodge, or similar

After breakfast, leave Ankarana and drive north toward Diego Suarez, one of Madagascar’s most beautiful northern coastal towns.

On the way, visit the Sacred Lake of Antagnavo. This site is connected with local traditions and beliefs, so the visit should be done respectfully with the local guide’s instructions. The lake offers a peaceful natural setting, cultural atmosphere, reflections, and a different kind of landscape experience.

After the visit, continue toward Diego Suarez. The road passes through villages, dry northern landscapes, plantations, and changing scenery before reaching the coast.

On arrival in Diego Suarez, check in at the hotel. Depending on timing, a short city orientation, market stop, or coastal viewpoint can be arranged.

Accommodation: Grand Hotel Diego, Allamanda Hotel, Le Grand Hôtel, or similar

After breakfast, visit Amber Mountain National Park, a cool rainforest reserve near Joffreville. This park offers a complete contrast to the dry landscapes of Ankarana and the Red Tsingy.

With a local guide, explore forest trails, waterfalls, and wildlife areas. Possible sightings include crowned lemur, Sanford’s brown lemur, northern bamboo lemur, chameleons, frogs, geckos, birds, butterflies, orchids, ferns, mosses, waterfalls, and forest streams.

In the afternoon, return toward the coast and visit the famous Three Bays: Sakalava Bay, Dune Bay, and Pigeon Bay. These bays are excellent for coastal discovery, with turquoise water, dunes, windswept beaches, rocks, and beautiful late-afternoon light.

Return to Diego Suarez for the night.

Accommodation: Grand Hotel Diego, Allamanda Hotel, Le Grand Hôtel, or similar

Today is dedicated to Ramena and the Emerald Sea, one of the most beautiful marine landscapes in northern Madagascar.

After breakfast, drive to Ramena, a seaside village known for its beach, fishermen, pirogues, seafood restaurants, and relaxed coastal atmosphere. From Ramena, take a boat excursion to the Emerald Sea, depending on sea conditions.

The Emerald Sea is famous for shallow turquoise water, white sandbanks, traditional boats, tropical horizons, and strong marine colors. It is one of the best places in northern Madagascar for seascape photography and coastal discovery.

Guests can enjoy beach time, boat scenes, fishermen, sandbanks, and turquoise water before returning to Diego Suarez or Ramena area for overnight.

Accommodation: Grand Hotel Diego, Allamanda Hotel, Le Grand Hôtel, or similar

After breakfast, depart from Diego Suarez and drive south toward Ankify, the gateway to Nosy Be. This is a long transfer day through villages, plantations, tropical vegetation, and northern landscapes.

Depending on timing, short stops can be made along the way for road photography, local life, or plantation scenery.

On arrival in Ankify, take the boat transfer to Nosy Be. The crossing offers views of the coast, islands, boats, and tropical sea colors.

On arrival in Nosy Be, transfer to the hotel and settle in for the island section of the tour.

Accommodation: Vanila Hotel, Ravintsara Wellness Hotel, Exora Beach Hotel, or similar

After breakfast, depart by boat for Nosy Komba, an island known for village life, handicrafts, tropical vegetation, beaches, and lemurs. This is a good place to observe island culture, local crafts, pirogues, village paths, beaches, and possible lemur encounters.

Later, continue to Nosy Tanikely, a small marine reserve island known for clear water, beach scenery, coral reef, marine colors, snorkeling possibilities, and tropical atmosphere.

This day combines island culture and marine landscapes, with a beautiful balance of village scenes, beaches, boats, and turquoise water.

Return to Nosy Be in the afternoon.

Accommodation: Vanila Hotel, Ravintsara Wellness Hotel, Exora Beach Hotel, or similar

Today is dedicated to the final island highlights around Nosy Be. Depending on sea conditions and timing, the program can combine Nosy Iranja and Nosy Sakatia, or focus mainly on one island with the other as an adjusted visit.

Nosy Iranja is one of the most beautiful island excursions in Madagascar. It is famous for its white sandbank connecting two islands, turquoise water, fishing boats, beaches, and tropical landscapes. It is ideal for wide seascapes, beach photography, island walking, and relaxed coastal discovery.

Nosy Sakatia is quieter and known for calm beaches, tropical vegetation, local life, and marine scenery. Depending on sea conditions and local rules, it may also offer opportunities to observe marine life such as sea turtles while respecting wildlife protection guidelines.

Return to Nosy Be for the final island night.

Accommodation: Vanila Hotel, Ravintsara Wellness Hotel, Exora Beach Hotel, or similar

After breakfast, transfer to Nosy Be Airport for the domestic flight to Antananarivo. On arrival in Tana, connect with your international departure if timing allows.

If the international flight is late at night, a day-use room, craft market visit, or short city stop can be arranged. If domestic flight schedules are tight, an extra overnight in Antananarivo is recommended for safety.

The tour ends after a complete northern Madagascar journey through Ankarafantsika, Anjohibe Caves, Antsanitia, Daraina, Marojejy, Sambava, Red Tsingy, Ankarana, Sacred Lake of Antagnavo, Amber Mountain, the Three Bays, Emerald Sea, and Nosy Be islands.
