Madagascar River Expedition & Wild West Coast

Welcome to Madagascar. Upon arrival at Ivato International Airport, you will be met by your driver-guide and transferred to your hotel in Antananarivo, locally known as Tana.

Depending on your arrival time, the rest of the day is free to relax after your international flight. If time allows, a short city orientation can be arranged, including the upper town, old colonial buildings, viewpoints over the city, local markets, or a first Malagasy dinner.

After breakfast, depart south along the RN7 through the scenic central highlands. The road passes rice fields, red-earth villages, traditional brick houses, and terraced hills. Along the way, a stop can be made in Ambatolampy, a town known for traditional aluminum pot-making and local metalwork.

Continue to Antsirabe, a charming highland town famous for its cool climate, thermal history, pousse-pousse rickshaws, colonial architecture, and craft workshops. In the afternoon, visit local artisan workshops such as miniature bicycles, embroidery, horn craft, gemstone cutting, or local sweets production.

Today the scenery changes as you leave the cooler highlands and descend toward the warmer western region. The road passes volcanic hills, dry valleys, rural villages, and changing vegetation.

Miandrivazo is known as one of the hottest towns in Madagascar and is the main gateway for the Tsiribihina River descent. Upon arrival, meet the river team, check the boat logistics, and prepare the luggage for the river expedition.

The evening is free to rest before the adventure begins.

After breakfast, transfer from Miandrivazo to the river embarkation point, where the boat crew prepares the equipment and loads the luggage. Once everything is ready, the Tsiribihina River descent begins, marking the start of a peaceful and scenic journey through western Madagascar.

The first day on the river introduces guests to the gentle rhythm of navigation: wide river landscapes, quiet villages, sandbanks, birdlife, and daily life along the riverbanks. This is a beautiful immersion into a remote part of Madagascar, far from paved roads and towns.

Lunch is prepared by the river team and served during the journey. In the afternoon, continue downstream toward Nosy Ampela, passing natural scenery, rural communities, and peaceful river views.

At the end of the day, the crew sets up camp near the river. Dinner is served in a simple expedition atmosphere, with the sound of the river and the open sky creating a memorable wilderness experience.

Wake up in the heart of the Tsiribihina River landscape and enjoy breakfast prepared by the river team. Today is one of the most beautiful sections of the river descent, with cliffs, forested riverbanks, calm waters, and excellent opportunities to observe birds and local life along the river.

Depending on water level and timing, stop near a waterfall and natural pool, where guests can enjoy a refreshing swim in a peaceful natural setting. This moment is often one of the highlights of the river expedition, combining adventure, relaxation, and beautiful scenery.

After lunch, continue navigating downstream toward the Berevo area. Along the way, the landscape changes between river cliffs, sandbanks, small villages, and open western scenery.

In the late afternoon, the crew prepares the riverside camp. The evening is spent in a quiet expedition atmosphere, with dinner under the stars.

After breakfast, enjoy the final stage of the Tsiribihina River descent. The boat continues downstream through peaceful river scenery until reaching the disembarkation point near Belo sur Tsiribihina.

This last river section offers a final opportunity to enjoy the calm atmosphere of the Tsiribihina, observe village life, and appreciate the wild western landscapes.

Upon arrival, meet the 4x4 team and continue by road toward Bekopaka, the gateway village to Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park. The drive crosses dry western landscapes, rural villages, river crossings, ferry points, and remote tracks, giving guests a strong sense of the adventure and isolation of this region.

Arrival in Bekopaka is usually expected in the late afternoon or evening, depending on river level, road conditions, ferry operations, and local timing. After check-in, guests can relax and prepare for the next day’s exploration of the spectacular Tsingy limestone formations.

Today is dedicated to Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park, one of Madagascar’s most spectacular protected areas. The park is famous for its sharp limestone pinnacles, caves, canyons, dry forest, viewpoints, and dramatic geological formations.

In the morning, visit the Grand Tsingy, the more adventurous section of the park. The circuit may include ladders, harness-secured passages, suspension bridges, narrow limestone corridors, caves, and panoramic viewpoints. This visit is ideal for active travelers and photographers.

In the afternoon, visit the Small Tsingy, a shorter but beautiful circuit with limestone formations, viewpoints, and dry forest. It is a perfect complement to the Grand Tsingy and gives another perspective of the park.

After breakfast, leave Bekopaka and drive back south through the western dirt road. The route includes ferry crossings, dry forest landscapes, baobabs, and remote villages. The journey is long and adventurous, but it is part of the true western Madagascar experience.

Arrive near Kirindy Forest in the late afternoon. If timing allows, you may do a night walk in the reserve to search for nocturnal lemurs, chameleons, geckos, insects, and other night-active wildlife.

Kirindy is one of the best-known dry forest sites in western Madagascar and is especially famous for nocturnal wildlife and the fossa.

Early morning visit in Kirindy Forest. This is a good time to look for lemurs, birds, reptiles, and possibly signs of the fossa. The dry forest environment offers a strong contrast to the rainforest parks visited later in the itinerary.

After the visit, continue toward Morondava. On the way, stop at the famous Avenue of the Baobabs, one of the most photographed landscapes in Madagascar. The best light is usually late afternoon and sunset, when the baobabs turn golden and the landscape becomes especially beautiful.

After sunset, continue to Morondava for the night.

Today the coastal expedition begins. Depart by 4x4 toward Belo sur Mer, a remote fishing village south of Morondava. The track may include sandy sections, salt flats, mangroves, river crossings, and open coastal scenery.

Belo sur Mer is known for its peaceful atmosphere, traditional wooden boat building, Vezo fishing culture, and beautiful seaside setting. The village feels far from mass tourism and is a perfect place to slow down after the intense river and Tsingy adventure.

A full day to enjoy Belo sur Mer. You can relax on the beach, visit the village, see traditional wooden boat construction, meet local fishermen, or take an optional pirogue excursion depending on sea conditions.

Possible activities include beach walking, photography, mangrove discovery, village visit, seafood lunch, or simply resting by the lagoon. This day is also important as a comfortable break before the more remote and physically demanding coastal tracks ahead.

Leave Belo sur Mer and continue the 4x4 expedition south toward Manja. This is a wild travel day through sandy tracks, bush landscapes, river crossings, and isolated villages. The journey is long and adventurous, with limited infrastructure along the way.

Manja is mainly used as an overnight stop between the west coast and the southwest coastal route. Arrival time depends on road condition, weather, ferry timing, and river crossing situations.

Accommodation in this region is usually simple, but the experience is part of the expedition character of this remote route.

After breakfast, continue south toward Morombe, then onward to Andavadoaka. This section is part of the remote southwest coastal adventure. The landscape gradually changes toward drier coastal vegetation, dunes, lagoons, sandy tracks, and Vezo fishing villages.

Andavadoaka is a beautiful seaside village known for its turquoise lagoon, coral coast, fishing culture, and relaxed atmosphere. Arrival is usually in the late afternoon, depending on the condition of the track.

Today you continue along one of the most scenic coastal sections of the expedition. The route passes beaches, dunes, spiny vegetation, fishing villages, and the stunning area of Salary Bay.

Salary Bay is known for its white sand, blue lagoon water, and remote beach scenery. After stops for photos and coastal views, continue toward Ifaty, a seaside village north of Toliara.

The Ifaty area is known for beaches, snorkeling possibilities, spiny forest, and Vezo culture.

After breakfast, leave the coast and drive inland through Toliara, then continue along the RN7 toward Ranohira, gateway to Isalo National Park. The scenery changes from coastal plains to dry savanna, rocky hills, and sandstone landscapes.

Arrive in Ranohira in the afternoon. Depending on timing, enjoy sunset near the Isalo Window or simply relax at the lodge before the next day’s hike.

Full-day visit of Isalo National Park, one of the most beautiful landscapes along the RN7 route. The park is famous for sandstone massifs, canyons, natural swimming pools, dry forest, open savanna views, and unique endemic vegetation.

Possible circuits include the Natural Swimming Pool, Canyon des Makis, Canyon des Rats, Namaza Forest, viewpoints, and waterfall areas, depending on guest fitness and local guide recommendation.

During the hike, you may see ring-tailed lemurs, sifakas, birds, reptiles, endemic plants, and the famous elephant-foot pachypodium. Picnic lunch can be arranged inside the park.

Depart early from Ranohira and continue north along the RN7. The road passes the Ihorombe Plateau before reaching the Ambalavao region.

Visit Anja Community Reserve, a community-managed protected area famous for ring-tailed lemurs, granite rocks, caves, viewpoints, and local conservation success. This reserve offers excellent opportunities for photography and close observation of lemurs in a beautiful natural setting.

After the visit, continue through Fianarantsoa and then east toward Ranomafana. The landscape becomes greener as you approach the rainforest region.

Today is dedicated to Ranomafana National Park, one of Madagascar’s most important rainforest destinations. The park protects dense tropical rainforest, highland forest, waterfalls, rivers, and rich biodiversity.

With a local park guide, explore forest trails in search of lemurs, birds, frogs, chameleons, orchids, and rainforest scenery. Ranomafana is especially interesting for travelers who want to experience the contrast between Madagascar’s dry west, remote coast, and humid eastern rainforest.

In the evening, an optional night walk can be arranged outside the park boundary to look for nocturnal species.

After breakfast, leave Ranomafana and drive back toward the central highlands. Stop in Ambositra, Madagascar’s woodcarving capital, known for Zafimaniry-inspired carving, marquetry, furniture, and handicrafts.

Continue to Antsirabe for the night. This day is a comfortable transition from rainforest back to the highland route, with opportunities for craft shopping, photography, and scenic stops.

After breakfast, drive back to Antananarivo along the RN7. Depending on road conditions and timing, stops can be made for highland scenery, local markets, handicrafts, or photos.

Upon arrival in Antananarivo, transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for packing, rest, souvenir shopping, or a farewell dinner.

Transfer to Ivato International Airport for your departure flight. End of services.
